Community Opportunities and Volunteering

Garden Volunteers

A huge thank you to the wonderful team of volunteers, children and parents who help weed, tidy and prepare the extensive gardening areas. It's an opportunity to show teamwork and determination in action!  Good Gym provide volunteers to develop the polytunnel area and school grounds and The University of Sheffield, Virgin Media and HSBC have all contributed their time through 'away days' to developing our grounds.

Health and Nutrition
We offer a range of activities across the year which make use of Red Robin House, our extensive polytunnel and raised beds and Flourish, our community kitchen. The University of Sheffield medical students deliver a 5 week placement programme each year which links directly to our health and well-being programme. A professional chef trains families to cook and we teach families healthy alternatives to fast and convenience food.  Parents then teach each other key food preparation skills. We teach children and their families how to cook from scratch and to manage portion size.

Local Supermarkets and Community Fridge/ Freezer
We have a good relationship with local supermarkets and through our HubHub community fridge/ freezer, our volunteers redistribute surplus food back into the community each week. Please ask Georgie, our volunteer co-ordinator if you'd like to be involved. Produce grown in the polytunnel or available through community fridge is used as part of the cooking sessions in Red Robin House or used for our 'Night Off' evenings where families take over the school kitchens and cook for the community. All volunteers take part in food health and hygiene training. If you want to take part, let Georgie know.

HSBC
A team from HSBC developed Phase 2 of the Red Robin House garden. They worked extremely hard to transform the side garden from a pile of mud to an attractive produce display area. They also planted 22 Christmas trees. These are decorated with solar lights/seasonal decorations. The class planters are also now all filled with compost and have been developed individually by each year group. A large amount of fruit and vegetables are grown annually and the children have enjoyed picking and sampling the produce whilst visiting Red Robin House and Flourish- our community kitchen.
